Buca di Beppo – Gluten Free Family Style Italian Food

February 19th, 2011. Published under Dinner, Lunch, Restaurants. Comments.

I just found out that the Las Vegas & Summerlin Buca di Beppo restaurants now have gluten free menus.  I haven’t eaten there in a couple years, but their normal menu offers all kinds of great family-style italian food.  You can check out their gluten free menu here.

We’ll hit Buca di Beppo soon & post a gluten free review.

Aces Up Gluten Free Goodies

February 16th, 2011. Published under Bakeries. Comments.

There’s finally a gluten-free bakery in the Las Vegas area!  Aces Up Gluten Free Goodies is in the Summerlin area (on the west side of town).  It’s a little bit hard to find tucked away in the back corner of a shopping center.  However, everything we’ve tried from them has been outstanding – brownies, cookies, dinner rolls and a few other treats.

It’s well worth the trip to pick up goodies from Aces Up, however you will need to plan ahead.  Their hours are limited to when everyone I know is at work (11am – 5pm Monday through Friday).  Also, starting on Feb 18, 2011, you have to pre-order 48 hours in advance.

Browse their menu online here: http://www.acesupglutenfreegoodies.com/ You can place your order over the phone or through their online order form.  When you drive there, the shopping center is on the southeast corner of W. Desert Inn Road and S. Hualapai Way.  The bakery is located several stores behind the Starbucks.  Their address is 3370 South Hualapai Way, Suite 145, Las Vegas, NV, 89117.

Lazy Joe’s Fish & Chips

February 16th, 2011. Published under Dinner, Lunch, Restaurants. Comments.

Lazy Joe’s Fish & Chips is a local cafe-style restaurant that has almost a completely gluten-free menu.  Getting gluten-free fried foods at a restaurant is a rare treat.  Lazy Joe’s is a great place to go when you are hungry for some great fried food.

I’m not a fan of seafood, so I skipped out on the “fish” portion of the menu.  Their chicken fingers are definitely worth getting.  The chicken fingers come in 4, 5, or 6 pieces to a meal.  My wife & I shared a 6 piece chicken fingers last time we went with a side of fries & mozzarella sticks and had plenty for one of us to have leftovers the next day.

Lazy Joe’s web page lives here: http://members.cox.net/ljfishandchips/welcome.html

They’re located at 7835 South Rainbow Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89139.  Their phone number is (702) 489-6523.

The Melting Pot

April 5th, 2010. Published under Dinner, Restaurants. Comments.

We took a trip to The Melting Pot last week for a birthday dinner & the whole experience was fabulous.  We’d been to Melting Pots before, but that was before the gluten-free diet started.  We both assumed that they couldn’t do a gluten-free dinner.  Thankfully, we were wrong.  We spoke to an owner Zac and he was extremely familiar with gluten-free food preparations & menu selections.  He brought us their new gluten-free menu.  Steering clear of gluten was easy with the menu.  Our server Frankie did a great job making sure everything was safe & also was very knowledgeable about gluten-free dining.

If you’ve never been to The Melting Pot, it’s a fondue restaurant.  Nearly everything on their menu is served with a pot of fondue mixed and heated at your table.  We had an artichoke & spinach cheese dip appetizer with carrots and fruit for dipping.  They’re still in the process of getting gluten-free bread (but we were promised it was on the way soon), but we called ahead to make sure it was ok if we brought our own bread.  They were apologetic that they didn’t have gluten-free bread yet, but were happy for us to bring our own.  So, we brought a homemade loaf of bread (for the appetizer) and a small homemade pound cake (for the dessert).  Before we left home, we cut the bread and cake into cubes (for easy dipping) and brought them in Ziploc bags.  When our appetizer came out, they brought us an extra bowl to put our bread in.

For our main course, we ordered chicken and the 9oz filet mignon with their Caribbean-style Mojo fondue.  It came with mixed veggies, potatoes, and mushrooms.  Everything is delivered to your table uncooked and you’re given simple directions on cooking everything.  Cooking as you go actually slows down your typical rushed dinner and makes for a great time to really relax and enjoy your evening.  Prepare to spend a couple hours eating dinner.  The pace & atmosphere make it a great place for date night.

For dessert, we had the amaretto white chocolate fondue with bananas and strawberries.   Yup, it was every bit as good as it sounds.  The dessert usually comes with rice krispie treats, large marshmallows, pound cake, and brownies.  We asked for fruit only to keep things gluten free.  Our pound cake worked out great with the dessert fondue.

If you’re looking for a cheap dinner, this is not the place.  With an appetizer, two main dishes, a bottle wine, and a dessert our meal (with a free-dessert coupon) was about $110 plus gratuity.  Still, for a several hour romantic dinner experience with wonderful food, we think it’s well worth it.  Try it on your next night out.

Whole Foods Market in Henderson

January 25th, 2010. Published under Grocery Stores. Comments.

Whole Foods Market at 100 South Green Valley Parkway in Henderson offers the best selection of clearly labeled gluten-free groceries that we’ve found in the Vegas area.  On our last trip there, we talked with one of the managers about it and she gave us a printout of every gluten-free product they currently stock.  We’re not sure if other Whole Foods Markets in the area do the same, but next time you’re there ask for a listing of their gluten-free products.

Can I have extra gluten with that?

Sometimes you see things that just make you laugh.  There we were digging through the aisles in Whole Foods making sure we only picked up gluten-free products.  We looked up and saw this:

It’s vital.  Extra gluten please!

On The Border

January 17th, 2010. Published under Uncategorized. Comments.

On The Border is a Mexican food restaurant chain with locations all over the US & several other countries.  There’s only one On The Border in the Las Vegas area (Ann & 95), but they have a pretty good selection of gluten-free items.  We had their chicken & steak fajitas with corn tortillas & really enjoyed them.  The onions are apparently cooked in soy sauce, so you have to dodge them.  They can prepare several gluten-free vegetable options & their rice is gluten-free.

Sammy’s offers gluten-free pizza and more.  On their online menu, they only list a gluten-free pizza crust (costs $3 more).  In the restaurant however, they have a more extensive gluten-free menu including soups, appetizers, entrees, and desserts.  They even have a gluten-free beer.
